David Tabak knows how nonprofits work — and, perhaps more importantly, why they (sometimes) don’t. From big-picture retreat facilitation through the smallest details of operational planning, he combines an arsenal of experience with an open mind, a cheerful spirit, a reassuring attitude, and a perpetual sense of humor to solve challenges for startups and enterprises alike.

David Tabak

I have more than twenty-five years of experience developing and implementing strategic plans as a chief executive officer, staff member, board chair and consultant. I understand how to translate strategic goals into actionable tactics. I can provide the necessary framework to improve staff effectiveness and increase organizational efficiency. I can facilitate a planning process that is inclusive, ambitious and, most importantly, achievable.

My tenure at the American Bar Association, at which I held several progressively advanced positions culminating in leading the Association’s third largest section (30,000 members), provided me with the intricate knowledge of how associations work and the unique challenges of organizing disparate groups around a singular vision.

As Executive Director of Second Sense, I oversaw the transformation of a 65-year-old, locally focused social service organization into a respected and progressive service provider.

In 2014, I founded Tabak Nonprofit Strategies to help nonprofit organizations better achieve their missions. As a proven nonprofit CEO, I understand the challenges of creating consensus around strategic goals and providing a framework to achieve those goals.

From 2016 to 2019, I was executive director of Meals on Wheels Chicago and led my board and staff in a strategic planning process to increase our effectiveness and prominence in a challenging political environment.
